Time to Grow = Demolition?
In the past couple of weeks we've begun demolition and remodeling on Beutler and Sherlock Lodges. Both of these lodges were in need of some serious T.L.C. and updating. The renovation money for Beutler Lodge comes from our repair and maintenance funds while the money for the Sherlock renovation comes from the Time to Grow campaign. Thank you to all of you who have given so freely and generously to the Time to Grow campaign. You are truly helping to build camp and retreat ministry centers like Camp Magruder and the leaders of the future. Now is the time to give as donations to match grants are still needed to complete this project and others around the Oregon Idaho Conference.
Our maintenance staff have been hard at work on Beutler. They have gutted the kitchen and bathrooms and have taken off the old wood panel siding throughout the building. Before the renovation on Beutler Lodge is complete it will get new flooring (similar to what we have been using to upgrade our rustic cabins), new kitchen and bathroom plumbing, paint throughout, windows and trim, as well as kitchen and bathroom cabinets. The layout of the building has not been touched, but cosmetic changes are being made to bring it in line with some of the other recent projects throughout camp.
Sherlock is undergoing a much bigger renovation. We've contracted with JLT Construction which is the same company who renovated Edwards Lodge and some of the other major projects throughout camp. Our maintenance staff are working alongside the crew to install new windows, flooring, and whatever else they can to try to cut costs. The boiler/storage room is being eliminated with the move to more efficient cadet wall heaters. With this extra space, the bathrooms are being expanded to become ADA accessible and also will have showers. The kitchen is being gutted and will be getting new appliances and cabinets. The main room will get new insulation, windows, pine walls, flooring, lighting, and will be set up for projection and wireless internet.
The living space upstairs is getting converted into two cabins joined with a pocket door. A porch will be added to the exterior staircase giving the building a more finished look as well as allowing people to take group photos and enjoy some outdoor space. This porch will be accessible to both halves of the upstairs living space as both sides will have doors that opens on to it.
Sherlock's north side will be getting a small addition as well. This new addition is for all the kids or those who are kids at heart. A serious costume closet is being built which will be accessible to everyone in camp with an exterior door instead of just those using Sherlock as it has been previously. This is going to be the biggest, best, walk in closet Camp Magruder has ever seen.
Stay tuned for more pictures and news on the renovation projects happening at Camp Magruder this winter.
